Fort Santiago

FORT SANTIAGO

Fort Santiago is one of the oldest fortification in Manila that was citadel built by a Spanish navigator and Governor Miguel López de Legazpi for the newly established city of Manila in the Philippines in 1571. It is an Italian-Spanish Architectural style  which can be found at defense fortress located at Intramuros, Manila.

The Fort Santiago is notable for being the headquarters of the armies of several powers in Philippine history. It is one of the most popular and important historical places in the Philippines. Several lives were lost in its prisons during the Spanish Empire and World War II. It served as a storage for ammunition, and was converted into a prison cell for activists and the political resistance. Jose Rizal is one of the national heroes who was imprisoned here before his execution in 1896. This is why the Rizal Shrine museum displays memorabilia of the hero in their collection and the fort features, embedded into the ground in bronze, his footsteps representing his final walk from his cell to the location of the actual execution. This tourist spot has witnessed a lot of historical events that our country has experienced.

MY UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE INSIDE THE DUNGEON OF FORT SANTIAGO

Fort Santiago is one of my favorite historical places I've ever visited. I've discovered a lot of trivia and facts about what happened back then while wandering in this wonderful place. It was really interesting to learn more, and it became an instrument for opening people's eyes and minds about our country's history.

I was literally having goosebumps when I entered this sacred and historic place in Fort Santiago. It was a creepy experience for me because it felt suffocating and scary to see what those people experienced during World War II. The Fort Santiago Dungeon is the place where at least 600 fighters and prisoners of war were tortured and incarcerated. Furthermore, wandering around Fort Santiago was a fun, great, and memorable experience. It also allowed me to understand and connect with what happened in the past, as well as discover many interesting trivia and facts about our history.
