Manila Cathedral Church

The Mother of all Churches, Cathedrals, and Basilicas of the Philippines

It is recognized as the main Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines, located in the Plaza de Roma, Intramuros Manila. Its official name is Manila Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica. The cathedral serves both as the Prime Basilica of the Philippines and the highest seat of the archbishop in the country. It was the one chosen to become the Cathedral in 1581 when the Philippines was separated from the Archdiocese of Mexico and became a new diocese with its episcopal seat in Manila.

The Manila Cathedral Church is one of the famous churches in Manila because of its Romanesque Revival of Neo-Romanesque style. Its highlights include the dome-like ceiling, stained glass windows and mosaics, detailed symbolic representation, marble floors and columns, and restored walls. Aside from its style, it depicts the story of Intramuros, the story of Manila, as well as the Philippines. The beauty of the present cathedral reflects details of architectural finesse and fidelity to its old form, to its glory and grandeur that have always been its distinguishing mark.

SHORT STORY TIME ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE:

When I first saw the beauty of the Manila Cathedral, it felt surreal, especially when I had the chance to go inside the church. It also felt like an achievement for someone who desires to go to many places. This is also where I first experienced eating puto bumbong. It was literally one of the most unforgettable simbang gabi experiences I've ever had. Aside from desiring the beauty and style of this church, the priest's sermon and words of wisdom are literally remarkable. The memories I've made in front of this church with my loved ones are also the ones that I will cherish and treasure throughout my life. Lastly, I can attest that it is a must-visit place in Intramuros, Manila.

You may also visit La Cathedral Cafe, located behind the Manila Cathedral, if you want to cherish the stunning view when you dine on their roof deck. It is a highly recommended place to eat with your loved ones. After visiting the various tourist attractions in Intramuros, you may rest your weary feet here. Good foods, a cool breeze, the gentle tolling of the church bells every hour, and an IG-worthy backdrop makes it a must-visit.
